A New Organ Discovered – Why the Excitement!

health care medical medicineThe human body consists of organs that are necessary for our survival. Each organ plays its own distinct role. The brain, for example, works as a control center for the body to process sensory information, regulate blood pressure and breathing, and release hormones. Now, scientists have discovered a new organ that they previously didn’t know existed that may change the future when it comes to treating major diseases.

Currently, there are 79 recognized organs in the human body that vary according to function and size. The discovery of this new organ will cause the number to rise to 80, once it gains recognition from the medical and scientific community. Of those, eleven are classified as main organ systems of the body. Included on this list is the largest organ of the body, the skin. The newly discovered organ, called the interstitium, lies beneath the skin and in tissue layers lining the gut, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles. It was always there, but it was previously considered “dense connective tissue.” Scientists have discovered that it is instead a series of fluid-filled compartments that act as “shock absorbers” to protect bodily tissue from damage.

There are many benefits that may result from this exciting discovery. According to Fox News, “Since the interstitium helps move fluid around the body, it may also be a way that cancer spreads and moves into a person’s lymphatic system.” It is vital that research continues to gain a better understanding of the role of the interstitium in the human body and how it may be used to conquer diseases like cancer.
