‘Materialism Has Become Both a New Religion and a New Political Cause’

shopping materialism religionThe 21st Century has brought us a boatload of new technology, an abundance of leisure time and a newfound focus on materialistic ethics. It’s a new world in which we live but it is the kind of world in which pessimism, disrespect and wrong-minded beliefs and objectives beset the younger generations.

Materialism has become both a new religion and a new political cause.  Attorney General William Barr put it this way in a recent speech at Notre Dame: “Secular forces and their allies have marshaled all the forces of mass communication, popular culture, the entertainment industry, and academia, in an unremitting assault on religion and traditional values.”

America was founded on a set of “essential civic virtues.”  The Bill of Rights Institute explains that these qualities “bind a self-governing people together in communities that facilitate a healthy civil society.  As Americans we believe it is essential to understand and implement these fundamental or founding principles and civic virtues.”

For the first time in the history of the U.S. too many younger citizens pine for the so-called “freedoms” of historically perverse political ideologies including socialism, collectivism and even communism.  They seem to believe that under a socialist government they won’t have to work so hard; that the government will care for them from cradle to grave, providing them with a whole lot of free stuff.  They want the government to pay for their educations, their medical care, their housing.

Remember progressive would-be presidential candidate Andrew Yang who promised he’d pay every adult American $1,000 a month with no strings attached if they vote for him.  Variations on that theme are now being voiced by mainstream Democratic wannabes, including Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders.  They want to send checks to stay-at-home parents.

The Heritage Foundation published an essay by historian Lee Edwards, Ph.D. last December in which he noted that:  “There is disquieting evidence of many young Americans’ sympathy for socialism. Exhibit A: 2.052 million people under the age of 30 voted for democratic socialist Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primaries and caucuses. Exhibit B: Polls find that, not only do a large majority of millennials have a favorable opinion of socialism, a near majority would prefer to live under socialism rather than capitalism. Exhibit C: The no-longer sleeping Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) now boasts 30,000 members, most of them in their twenties and eager to follow the socialist banner.”

Those who seek to replace the American way of life with a political system that makes promises they can’t keep need to wake up and do their homework.  Governments that embrace communism these days — Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, etc. — and those that embraced socialism in the past [think the USSR] don’t work.  And, they never will.

We are on the cusp of destruction of our Constitutional way of life. We are in danger of losing our basic rights of free speech, freedom of assembly and to bear arms. Our schools and colleges have kidnapped our youths minds. Christians values and morals have been dumped in favor of evil actions and beliefs. ” As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.

I think we’re misreading the youth, at least the majority of the youth. There are the chronic lazies in every generation. When I was in high school and afterwards, there were jobs everywhere waiting. But today’s youth went through a very rough time not so long ago. They went through their own great depression. While many of us boomers may have been struggling we were mostly doing OK. Not so with our young people. Our young adults were unable to find jobs. They watched most of the entry level manufacturing jobs leave hometown USA and move to other countries. What jobs they could find were void of any benefits and were not permanent. They had no health care. Many turned to drugs, alcohol and crime. Suicide was epidemic. Many built up massive debt in education loans. Many were solely dependent on their parents. These were very bad times for these young people. And even though things have changed and are much better, they remember those bad times and do not want another generation to live though that.
That is what the left is exploiting, we need an answer and historically that’s a tough one.

Material things are nice, up to a point… we all need food, shelter, transportation, access to medical care, some disposable income, etc. but America in many quarters is a nation of EXCESS. Even middle class parents go deeply into debt to buy their children sooooo many toys for birthdays and Christmas… so many they cannot even enjoy or play with them all.
EXCESS leaves many with a feeling of emptiness in their lives, so they buy more and more. What many don’t realize is the emptiness is a quest for something spiritual, more meaningful, than just ‘stuff.’ No matter what your religion, REAL MEANING be found by walking in natural surroundings (green spaces); a rowboat on a serene lake, watching sunrises and/or sunsets; realizing the beauty of ‘the creation’ and this wonderful planet we inhabit.
Whether you read the Bible or Talmud; attend church or synagogue regularly or not, this is our need. Spending time alone, perhaps in meditation, with our phones and TVs turned off to help us become ‘centered’ and in touch with our ‘spiritual side.’
Limiting our exposure to FAKE NEWS and even more accurate political chaos these days, which is happening all over the world, will help bring us back to a feeling of peace. The chaos is so confusing, and worrisome to many, especially young people and returning combat veterans — that depression, anxiety disorders and suicides have increased, We all need to STOP, spend a few quiet moments (or hours) with ourselves alone… and ask ourselves what it is we truly want out of life. Many houses of worship offer groups for these kinds of discussions as well. God bless.

It appears the “too many younger citizens” have received their needs and even wants without actually “working” to pay for it which promotes laziness. The fact they want that to continue without them ‘having to work too hard” to receive it proves it. Thing is, they have no clue of the eventual results. When the money from working folks runs out, the ‘receivers’ will be required to work (harder than they can imagine) and beaten into submission if they slack or complain. They have no clue and really need to WAKE UP.

“Materialism” is not a “new religion” nor a “new political political cause.” It’s as old as “sin in the Garden of Eden.” Remember, “Adam and Eve coveted” more when they had contentment and everything provided for them…still wasn’t enough. What is “new is the way materialism is presented today” in the form of “socialism” that deceitfully leads to “communism.” Today, “materialism’s idolatry enhances socialism’s slavery” for those who swallow it’s fruit.

The communists in this country have been working hard for the last 50+ years to brain wash the younger generation to believe that la la land really exists….and what really scares me is that so many of these new generations, Gen. Z and the Millennials have all the computer technology at their finger tips, yet they cannot see that socialism is the same as communism and once freedoms are lost, they have to be regained by force….i.e. Civil War. Our public school systems and colleges are run by communists and if you can get your kids out of the public school system, your children may be saved. As Winston Churchill said, “socialism is a philosophy of FAILURE, the creed of IGNORANCE, and the gospel of ENVY. Its inherent virtue is the EQUAL SHARING OF MISERY.”

It is only my opinion, but I believe that young Americans are focused on material things because they are trying to find something missing in their lives and they think that buying material things will make them happy, but it doesn’t. Buying more stuff only leads to buying more things, not because they need them, but because they want them. I am sorry for this generation, because as parents we have failed in our jobs as parents. Perhaps would should return to a simpler time when families spent more time together, both at the dinner table and perhaps in pews on Sunday.

Such a shame that the younger generation claim to be so ‘smart’ and act like the three monkeys: hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Makes me wonder and amazed that they can t see how the socialist countries don t work; do the arithmetic: someone has to fork over the money for all these ‘freebies’!!

You can’t take all that stuff with you when you die and why does anyone want to be mastered by materialistic “junk”? Its way more important what you store up in Heaven than what you amass here on earth! And as for going Socialist, parents and grandparent need to get on the ball and educate this younger generation as to the horrors of that type of government. We’ve spoiled our youth for way too long and allowed the public school system to brainwash them for decades! This is what can be expected when you kick God out of your churches, homes, schools and country.

Shelley, everything you said I agree. With God you will thrive; without God there will be total destruction. People don’t realize that hurricanes, tsunamis, tropical storms, and tornadoes are God’s way of telling us that He is the only one with the power to bring countries to their knees. Removing God, this country will not exist in freedom. The new generation have been taught nothing but materialism by their parents that put babies in front of television rather than playing with them and as each year passes the younger the child is the more they are allowed on cell phones. This is why our new generation doesn’t mind filthy language, they don’t care what type of music their child is listening to. They don’t have to babysit their children—just give them a cell phone, video game, television. The older I get the more materialistic beliefs abound. One generation back, there were rules to live by, respect, love and kindness were taught. We had our imagination to use to entertain ourselves. Today most children are not outside except to go somewhere. It’s all disgusting.

I don’t often go to church, but I speak to God often in my prayers, the way I live my life, how I treat all people. This is mainly due to growing up in public schools where we said the Lords prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance every day in school. As far as I’m concerned things started going wrong when we stopped doing that! Don’t forget the “I, Me, Mine” culture started in California. Build the Wall from Mexico to Oregon. Let all these liberal people go there and stay there! Secession for California now.

The recent speech by US Attorney General William Barr at Notre Dame University on secularism is worth contrasting with the Socialist Convention in Chicago this summer that was dominated by LGBTQ revolutionaries who’s motives included the destruction of Christianity in America. The battle lines are being drawn like never before in American history. A resurgence of patriotism is needed at our pulpits. We currently have a President who is passionate about religious liberty. Now our churches need to be equally passionate and vocal about American patriotism.

I believe that a Revolution is gaining strength in America…..there is going to be a straw that breaks the camel’s back …. It is lurking and these people including the communists and crooks in Washington will be in the sites of the revolution.
